Welcome

This blog intends to discuss the possibilities of creating 3Dpdf's from 3ds max for realtime 3D visualizations.

  1. hi :), nice tutorial. When its so easy to create real-shaded 3d-pdfs why nobody uses it yet?

  2. Thanks,
I think the reason is that there are no further UV Map Channels supported to map for example the Self Illiumination independently from the Diffuse Color. I'm not sure if this is a limitation by the .u3d file standard (which is used internally), but it scares many 3D artists away, because it is a heavy limitation of capabilities.

  3. Good write up of the process.

I find its more a problem in getting the clients to understand that there is a difference in the models used to create real time models vs the ones used for rendering, and building one, does not mean you can re-use that model for the other purpose without a lot of re-working.

that combined with the lack of flexibility to modify the geometry after you have it mapped and baked, leads to headaches in dealing with client building changes!

been doing these for a few years, although not with PDF :)

  4. Thanks Dave,
absolutely, and in addition to that most people don't see the benefits of realtime 3D visualizations because of the higher costs which come along with and lack of presence on the market. To deal with customers uncertainties, I have no better idea than to communicate with prerenderings during the production process at the moment. But because it's difficult, it doesn't mean we shouldn't try.

  5. Hello Chuck!
I really like your 3d-pdf work. We are using light-baking as well and from what it looks like directlight and vpr-solutions are the only ones doing so at the moment.
This blog is great, keep on!
    Best regards,
    Helmut

  6. Hello Helmut,
thank you, and sorry for the late response.
Let's hope that more people get into 3D pdf, so we get more tools and features. I have some more tutorials to write (more 3ds max related ones), but for the next couple of weeks, or maybe months, I have some other ideas to follow. Such as adding more interactivity, animated cameras, testing different renderstyles and testing the possibilities of using directx mesh for realtime 3D visualizations.

    Best regards, Chuck
